Opening Ceremony

Low Bank Ground Outdoor Education Centre opened its new facilities for children and young people with disabilities on Saturday, 12 November 2011. Funded by Wigan Council through the the 'Aiming High for Disabled Children' grant, the facilities consist of a bedroom with 2 profile beds, a fully equipped hygiene room and a hoist which is fitted to the jetty. It is intended to offer respite facilities for children and young people with disabilities. The Centre itself has a long history of providing residential outdoor and environmental education to the children of Wigan, and the new rooms will enhance what is already an outstanding facility.

A group of children, young people and staff from Wigan stayed at the Centre over the weekend, 'testing' the facilities and taking part in a range of outdoor activities, both on dry land and the water. The Centre has had a hoist fitted to its jetty that will enable wheelchair users to access the Centre's boats, and over the course of the weekend the group also used the Lake District National Park's new wheelchair accessible boat, currently based at Coniston Boating Centre. The suite was opened by Jack Bannister (13), an inspirational young person who has been coming to the Centre since the age of 4. Jack has SEDC (spondylo epiphyseal displacia congenita), a condition that has resulted in 29 operations up to the age of 9. Despite this he has taken part in a wide range of outdoor pursuits, continually showing just what can be achieved with a positive frame of mind.

Low Bank Ground and Hinning House Outdoor Education Centres update

As you will be aware, the Council is currently considering a range of options regarding the future of the Centres. As a consequence, we had only been able to confirm bookings up to Christmas 2011. Those discussions are still ongoing, but we are now in a position to be able to confirm all bookings from January to August 2012
