Primary- ‘Explorers’

The emphasis is on an adventurous approach to the exploration of 'natural' environments such as mountain, forest, lake and river. A typical programme includes forest and mountain walks, orienteering and rock scrambling. At Low Bank Ground, canoeing and kayaking are usually included and at Hinning House a farm visit (optional - extra charge) and off-road biking. These activities are used as a vehicle for learning.

Through personal challenge children explore their own potential, developing self-reliance and self-respect. They learn to take responsibility for their personal safety, clothing and equipment. Through journeying in small groups they are encouraged to work together and to gain an awareness of the environment. For many this will be a first residential experience away from home, and living together and playing their part in the domestic routine of the Centres will be very important. The programmes take place in the beautiful Lake District National Park where 'rock', 'water', 'wind', 'cold' 'mountain', 'forest' and 'river' take on a new, real and vivid meaning based on direct experience.

'Explorers' covers Programmes of Study for Outdoor and Adventurous Activities at Key Stage 2 of the P.E. curriculum. Specific aspects of the National Curriculum, for example in Geography or Science, are incorporated by the inclusion of activities such as river, freshwater, farm and village studies.
